Registered Paralegals Consultation

The deadline for comments or questions on the Consultation has now passed.

We will be in touch with those people who have taken part in the process, and the next steps in the Registered Paralegal scheme will be announced soon. If however, you still would like to comment on the proposal please e-mail Collette Paterson directly on collettepaterson@lawscot.org.uk.

The Law Society of Scotland Registered Paralegal scheme , developed in partnership with the Scottish Paralegal Association (SPA), is set to launch in spring/summer 2010. The scheme will comprise entry standards, a Code of Conduct, Continuing Professional Development rules and complaints regime. Each Registered Paralegal will work under the supervision of a Scottish solicitor .

The Society is committed to this scheme which seeks to define and credit the role of the paralegal in Scotland  -  for paralegals, for solicitors, and crucially for the public who need to have faith in the knowledge and skills of the people dealing with their legal transactions.

The SPA has firmly believed for many years that not only should the role of paralegal be promoted and that paralegals should gain the recognition they deserve, but that standards are an absolute necessity to the integrity of and respect for paralegals as an emerging profession.

The first stage of the launch next year will be to transfer practising paralegals who already meet the standard of 'Registered Paralegal' into the scheme, before it is opened to new entrants.

The policy paper is still available on the right hand side of this page.
