Chief Executive and Office Bearers

Lorna Jack, Chief Executive of the Law Society of Scotland.
Lorna Jack joined the Society in January 2009. Prior to the Law Society, Lorna was based in the United States, as President Americas for Scottish Development International, the Scottish Government's trade and investment arm. In this role she was responsible for operations across five locations in the U.S, Canada, Mexico and Brazil and at an early stage she delivered a large operational restructuring and redirection of this team. Under her leadership the team delivered significant gains on its inward investment agenda (including new and expansion projects with Dell; Amazon; JP Morgan; Morgan Stanley; Trump and Wyeth). They also supported around 150 Scottish companies every year to tackle the Americas market. This included the option of co-locating with SDI in cities throughout the US when companies were making their first real step into the North American market.
Previously, Lorna was Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise Forth Valley, one of 12 local enterprise companies covering Scotland. Prior to her appointment to the Chief Executive role in 2000, she was Director of Operations for the previous two years. Prior to joining SE Forth Valley, she was Head of the Global Companies Enquiry Team within Scottish Enterprise (SE). She has also served as Head of the Food Team at SE as well as head of a team at SE Grampian who provided training to the food and manufacturing sectors.
A chartered accountant by profession, she completed her training with Arthur Andersen and spent six years in financial management roles with a UK telecoms and cable television company before joining Scottish Enterprise. She is a graduate of Aberdeen University and for 4 years sat on the Board of the University’s US Development Trust.

Ian Smart, President of the Law Society of Scotland 2009/2010.
Having served his apprenticeship with Pattison & Sim, Solicitors, Paisley, Ian Smart joined the profession in 1980 and then worked as a qualified assistant with Ross Harper & Murphy, initially in Glasgow's Easterhouse housing scheme before eventually becoming the partner in charge of their Cumbernauld Office. In 1991, he amicably left that firm to set up Ian S. Smart & Co, which is a general practice with a continued focus on legal aid funded litigation.
He joined the Council of the Society in 1997 and served for 4 1/2 years as Convener of the Society's Legal Aid Committee, representing the Society in the negotiations surrounding the major changes in the Civil Legal Aid scheme which took place during that period.
Having departed the Legal Aid Convenership, and prior to his election as President, he had served as deputy to Richard Henderson for eighteen months and was a key figure in starting the current ongoing internal reform process within the Society.
Jamie Millar, Vice President of the Law Society of Scotland 2009/10
Jamie did his training with Tindal, Oatts and Rodger, qualifying in 1973. He was a partner with the firm from 1975 to 1986. From 1986 to 2006 he was a partner at Bishops and from 2006 he has been a partner at Brodies.
Jamie has over thirty years experience as a corporate lawyer specialising in acquistions/mergers, joint ventures, trade associations and corporate governance.
He was the Society's Treasurer for three years before becoming Vice President in May 2009.

Richard Henderson, past President of the Law Society of Scotland
Richard Henderson recently retired as Solicitor to the Scottish Executive and was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath in the New Year's Honours List 2007. Richard joined the then Scottish Office Solicitor's Office in 1972 on qualifying as a solicitor. During his career there he dealt variously with agriculture, education, public local inquiries and employment law, and undertook a three-year secondment to the Scottish Law Commission. He was appointed a divisional solicitor in 1987, Deputy Solicitor in 1996 and Solicitor to the Secretary of State for Scotland in 1998 before becoming Solicitor to the Scottish Executive on devolution in 1999. He has also served for the past nine years as a co-opted member of the Council of the Law Society of Scotland.
David McClements, Treasurer
David McClements is a partner with Russel + Aitken LLP based in their Denny Office. He was appointed as a partner in 1998 and has worked with the firm since 1995 having qualified in 1991. He has a particular interest in Incapacity and Mental Health Law and was involved in the Alliance which campaigned successfully for the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000. His main area of legal practice is private client work. He has been a council member of The Law Society of Scotland since 2001 and served on a number of committees including professional practice and guarantee fund, and convening one of the client relations committees. He was appointed Treasurer in May 2009. His other interests involve working as director of Alzheimer Scotland the Dementia Charity in Scotland and he is on the board of a local mental health association. He enjoys running in his spare time, having completed a number of half marathons, and is hoping to target his first marathon in the future. He is married to Louise, a Church of Scotland minister and he has two daughters.
