Useful links for new lawyers
Organisations
The Scottish
Young Lawyers Association (SYLA) is a non-profit organisation,
which has been representing, educating, and entertaining young
lawyers in Scotland since 1974. We are also a member of the
European Young Bar Association (EYBA) and have strong links with
young lawyers groups across the UK and worldwide. The term young
lawyers means LLB students, Diploma students, trainees and those
who have been qualified as solicitors for ten years or less.
We organise events and seminars which reflect the demands from
new lawyers and we keep costs to a minimum (or run courses free) to
enable people to attend. The SYLA also runs a diverse programme of
social events. Our summer BBQ is a great opportunity to meet
trainees and newly qualified lawyers, and to find out what it's
really like to work in private practice, in-house, for the
government or the Crown Office.
To be kept up to date with SYLA seminars and events, please
visit www.syla.co.uk and become a member of SYLA
online. Membership is free.
The Trainee and Newly Qualified Society, or TANQ,
was set up with the threefold aim of: raising the profile of the
Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow among new entrants to the
legal profession; providing a forum for education seminars
particularly suited to the needs of trainee solicitors; and
providing an opportunity for trainees to meet with their peers to
share experiences in a social setting.
Attending TANQ events is not only a great way to meet new
people, network and hear about what's happening in law firms in and
around Glasgow, but it is also a good opportunity to increase your
knowledge and understanding of different areas of law. If you are
starting your legal career, TANQ is an invaluable way to learn from
other people's experiences and to make contacts that may help you
in the future - and it's free! We aim to put on five or six
education seminars a year as well as several social events. The
seminars qualify for one hours CPD for newly qualified solicitors
or second-year trainees who hold a practising certificate. Law
students and those completing their Diploma in Legal Practice are
most welcome to attend these events and we could encourage you to
come along.

website.
