Student Benefit Scheme

Year 2011/ 2012 currently open for online applications (current Diploma students / Diploma graduates)

Student Extra is the Law Society of Scotland's student benefit scheme, which has been created to help current Diploma students and recent Diploma graduates* feel part of the legal profession. By subscribing to the scheme, you can build up your network, develop your legal knowledge and skills and increase your confidence as you attend interviews and enter the workplace.

*You must be a current Diploma student or have completed the Diploma in the last three years and not yet have commenced a training contract to be eligible. If you are a Diploma graduate and wish to join the scheme please email studentextra@lawscot.org.uk

The  scheme runs from 1st November 2011 until 31 October 2012, but you can join at any time. The scheme is now £30 inc VAT for the year (until 31st October 2012). Further details are below. The Student Benefit Scheme

This is a great time to start getting involved in the profession. The Society has developed a programme of continuing professional development specifically for new lawyers and every seminar and event is included free of charge, as part of the Student Benefit package. Whether you are interested in learning how to manage your emails or would like to know about appearing in court, there is a seminar for you.


CPD for New Lawyers

CPD for new lawyers no cornersAs a Student Benefit Subscriber, all CPD for new lawyers seminars are free of charge. In 2010/2011, 32 CPD for new lawyers events were held across Scotland. Typical courses include learning how to network, how to progress your career, Sheriff Court  and Court of Session Procedure, and email management training. Update invitation Along with the CPD for New Lawyers programme, the Student Benefit Scheme also means you can attend our Update CPD courses at a discounted rate (wherever possible), allowing you to meet members of the profession and boost your CV.

The Journal

FREE Journal magazine subscription

The Journal is the members' magazine for the profession, out monthly to keep every solicitor in Scotland up to date with legal developments and issues. As part of your Student Extra package, you will receive a free copy of the Journal every month.

Premium Benefits

All Student Benefit Subscribers will receive a booklet of lifetsyle benefits for their nearest city. This includes discounts at restaurants, in retail and travel, and can be used throughout the year.
