The professional subjects

Please read this if only you started the law degree before 2011/2012 or you are a student at the University of Edinburgh or Glasgow Caledonian University:

During the LLB, you will study the professional subjects in the first, second, and possibly third year of your course.

Each university has its own way of structuring the LLB so it is likely that what these subjects are called, or how they are grouped together, probably won't match exactly with the list below, which is what the Society calls them. If you are unsure, please contact your adviser or director of studies.

Every subject studied during your law degree is important, but
listed below are the subjects which will determine your entry to the Diploma in Legal Practice or, from 2011, professional education and training stage 1 (PEAT 1).

Please note, the Foundation Programme will be introduced from September 2011. We strongly recommend you contact your university adviser/director of studies in order to find out if the introduction of the Foundation Programme could affect the course you are on and your entry to PEAT 1.

  • public law and the legal system
  • conveyancing
  • Scots private law
  • evidence
  • Scots criminal law
  • taxation
  • European community law*
  • Scots commercial law

*This subject is required for entry to the Scottish legal profession. The current position is that it is likely (although you can check at university) that you won't be able to graduate with your LLB without having passed EC Law. However, your marks in this subject won't be taken into consideration when you are applying for PEAT 1 - though, as above, we strongly recommend you contact your university adviser/director of studies in order to find out if the introduction of the Foundation Programme will affect this course.
