Information for judges

The Society is always looking for people to be involved as judges in the debating tournament. Judges can sign up now by clicking the link below.

We need judges from across Scotland to form a judging panel of three. We particularly need judges in rural areas for the early rounds.

No experience is necessary, though an interest and experience in debating is always welcome. We will look to ensure there is at least one experienced debating judge in each panel. If you would like to find out what is involved, we are more than happy for you to attend a debate and discuss the process with the panel of judges. Please email debate@lawscot.org.uk if you would like to do this.

We will allocate some judges to heats based on the information you have provided to ensure we have experienced judges at each heat. We will then email all judges with details of where we still need judges. If you would like to join a panel, please email back stating which heat you would like to join. We will then allocate on a first-come-first-served basis.

Shortly before each heat we will email the judges with the order papers, marking sheets and tournament guidelines. It would be helpful if all judges could ensure they read the tournament guidelines carefully prior to a heat. If you have any questions, please email debate@lawscot.org.uk.

Our tournament guidelines provide further information on everything you need to know, including:

  • structure of the tournament and an individual heat
  • timekeeping issues
  • the roles of speakers
  • offering and taking 'points of information'
  • judging guidelines and marking standards
  • room layouts
  • guidance for hosts (including a tick box check sheet of what to organise)
  • guidance for chairpersons
