Constitutional Law Sub-Committee

Commission on Scottish Devolution

The Constitutional Law Sub-Committee has been heavily involved with the Commission on Scottish Devolution (the Calman Commission). While the Society is not involved in the political discussion on whether the Scottish Parliament should have increased powers or not, any alteration to the constitutional framework would clearly have a substantial impact on the way in which law is made and delivered. The committee submitted written evidence to the commission and also attended an oral evidence session on the 20 February.

National Conversation

The Constitutional Law Sub-Committee has submitted written evidence to the National Conversation. Again, the Society is not involved in the political dicsussion on whether Scottish Parliament should be given extra powers or whether Scotland should become independent. The Society engaged with the UK Government over the drafting of the Scotland Act 1998 and would hope to be of similar use in the future. In its response, the Society recommends that greater thought needs to be given to the legal mechanisms required for whatever constitutional road Scotland may take.
