Society President and Vice President of Society Elected

The President and Vice President of the Law Society of Scotland for 2009/10 were  elected by members of the body’s ruling Council on 19 December.

Ian Smart, the current Vice President, was elected President from May 2009. Jamie Millar, the current Treasurer, will take the position of Vice President from that date.

Ian Smart said: “It is exciting to be able to carry on the valuable work started by
Richard Henderson, particularly during the Society’s 60th anniversary year.

“I hope to take forward liberalisation of legal services, to ensure the Society has a governance structure fit for the 21st century and to promote an outward looking profession that is fully engaged with Scottish civic society.”

He said his period in office would coincide with the passage of the Legal Profession Bill through the Scottish Parliament, adding that he would continue to build on the Society’s constructive relationship with government.

Ian Smart, a Cumbernauld sole practioner, joined the Council in 1998. He held the position of Convener of the Legal Aid Committee for almost five years. He was also Convener of the Access to Justice Committee and has sat on a number of regulatory committees.

Jamie Millar said: “I am honoured to be elected Vice President, particularly from such a strong field of candidates.

“The Society has already approved the introduction of Alternative Business Structures, while also committing itself to put in place an appropriate regulatory regime.
“I look forward to playing a part in overseeing that process while maintaining the integrity of the legal profession in Scotland.”

Jamie Millar is a corporate lawyer and partner at Brodies in Glasgow. He joined the Council in 2003 and is in his third year as Treasurer. He has been involved in the work of Client Relations Committees for nine years.
