Every practising certificate-holder will receive a Smartcard.

The card is issued in conjunction with the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) and can be used for access to prisons, courts, and police stations across Scotland, the UK, and Europe.

Criminal law practitioners received their cards in late 2014.  The Smartcard replaces the existing Law Society of Scotland ID which expired on 31 December 2014.
