Election results for Law Society Council announced

09 May 2013 | tagged News release

Nine solicitors have been elected to represent the profession on the Law Society of Scotland's governing Council.

They are:

Cupar, Dunfermline & Kirkcaldy: Eileen Sumpter, who is currently on Council, and Susan Williams, of Williams Gray Williams, Cupar.

Greenock, Kilmarnock & Paisley: Stuart Naismith, who currently sits on Council, and Simon Brown, of Matthew Brown, Irvine.

Glasgow: Alison Atack, Austin Lafferty, Dominic Sellar and Ian Sievwright, who are all current Council members, were returned. Nicholas Taylor of Leslie Wolfson was elected the fifth council member representing Glasgow.

A total of nine nominations were put forward for five Glasgow seats, while four nominations were proposed for two seats representing Greenock, Kilmarnock and Paisley solicitors. There were three nominations for two seats representing solicitors in Cupar, Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy.

Amanda Millar was returned unopposed to her seat for Perth in April.

Bruce Beveridge, Vice President of the Society, said: "I am delighted to welcome the new Council members and those returned to seats around the country. They bring with them the skills, experience and dedication which will benefit solicitors within each of their local constituencies and the profession as a whole.

"I was really encouraged to see so many contested elections with such strong candidates across the piece, and from a broad cross-section of the profession. That level of interest is so important in helping us further to enhance the Society's relevance, both to the profession and more broadly."

These are the first elections to be held since Society members voted to reduce the size of Council at the annual general meeting in May 2012. The election saw the number of seats representing Glasgow solicitors dropping from seven to five. The Cupar, Dunfermline & Kirkcaldy and Greenock, Kilmarnock & Paisley constituencies now have two representatives each on Council rather than three. Council will reduce from the current 62 seats to 46 over the next three years.

The new council members will be on council for three years, from June.
