Legal aid contracting would have "far reaching" impact

24 May 2013 | tagged News release

Ian Moir, Convenor of the Criminal Legal Aid Negotiating Team of the Law Society of Scotland, said: "We have received a timetable for considering contracting in legal aid, the introduction of which would signify a huge shift in the way legal aid is delivered. Contracting would have a far-reaching impact on people accused of crimes and on defence solicitors representing them. Any changes to the legal aid system must be underpinned by access to justice."

"We have alerted the profession to the timetable which the Scottish Legal Aid Board has published today.

"We welcome the opportunity for engagement prior to the formal consultation process and we will consult with the profession throughout this process before forming a view on this hugely significant matter."
