Pupils win through to second round of national debating tournament

29 January 2014 | tagged News release

Pupils from schools across Scotland have won through to the next round of a national debating tournament.

A total of 64 teams are gearing up to take part in the second round heats of the Law Society of Scotland's annual Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament to debate the motion 'This house believes that as the start of taking a stand on human rights, countries where homosexuality is considered a criminal offence should be expelled from the Commonwealth'.

The second round heats will be held on Thursday, 30 January, and Tuesday, 4 February. The successful teams will go through to the semi finals in early spring before a grand final in June.

Heather McKendrick, Careers and Outreach Manager at the Law Society, said: "We've had an excellent start to this year's Donald Dewar Debating Tournament - and we were delighted to welcome 19 teams from schools taking part in the competition for the very first time.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how the teams respond to the motion and wish them every success."

She added: "Many schools now have debating clubs and really encourage pupils to develop their skills in constructing and presenting well thought out and persuasive arguments. Debating is a great skill to have and helps to give young people a chance to consider issues relating to them and a voice to express their views and opinions."

The Law Society of Scotland Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament is sponsored by publisher Hodder Gibson. It was launched in 1999 and is the largest debating tournament for schools in Scotland.
