Statement following Financial Conduct Authority investigation into payday lender Wonga

25 June 2014 | tagged News release

A Law Society of Scotland spokesman said: "Anyone concerned about the identity of a Scottish legal firm or individual solicitor should check if they are listed in the Society's Find a Solicitor directory at www.lawscot.org.uk.

"The importance of taking common sense precautions was highlighted today with the release of the findings of an investigation into the payday lender Wonga.

"The investigation found that the company had sent letters to customers in arrears from non-existent law firms, threatening legal action, a practice the FCA described as 'unfair and misleading'.

"The Society is responsible for regulating Scottish solicitors and has an important duty towards the public interest. We are also committed to protecting solicitors' reputation for excellence and working to the highest professional standards."
