Society pays tribute to former President John McNeil
John McNeil, a former President of the Law Society of Scotland,
has died following a short illness.
Mr McNeil retired as senior partner of Edinburgh firm Morton
Fraser in 2002, having been assumed as a partner in one of its
consituent firms, Fraser Stodart & Ballingall in 1963. He was
President of the Law Society of Scotland during 1986-87.
A property lawyer, Mr McNeil served for over 40 years on the
Society's Conveyancing Committee, which he first joined in the
1960's, including a period as convener. He was also a longserving
member of the Joint Consultative Committee formed with Registers of
Scotland. He was appointed a CBE for services to the legal
profession.
Cameron Ritchie, current President of the Society, said: "I am
saddened by the news of John's death. He recently attended a Past
Presidents' meeting at Drumsheugh Gardens and contributed his
wisdom and his humour to the discussions. He will be missed."
