SCHOOL COMMENT…

Throughout this website we have tried to demonstrate that debating is an intellectual challenge for school pupils, that it can be fun, and that every school can of course start its own debating club. We would be delighted if, based on what you have read so far, your school decided to take part in the Society’s 2006/2007 Tournament. We are confident that the coaches and the school pupils would find the experience enjoyable and rewarding – BUT don’t just take our word for it!

Here are some words from schools which have taken part in the  debate...

DOLLAR ACADEMY – 2005/2006 winning school

“Winning the 2005/2006 Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament was the result of much hard work and dedication by the pupils, and was a testament to their team work over all four rounds. Over 90 schools entered some extremely talented teams, and Dollar Academy is very proud of our pupils’ achievement. Debating in the Scottish Parliament made the final even more memorable. Our young speakers will never forget the words of George Reid – “This is your Parliament, and tonight we have heard the young voice of Scotland”.

HUTCHESONS’ GRAMMAR SCHOOL - 2005/2006 runners-up

“Our experience in the Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Competition was hugely enjoyable and rewarding. This event really pushes students to show what they can achieve at their best and the whole process encourages independent, mature, creative thinking and builds self-confidence strongly. The early rounds were good fun with interesting motions and the Final itself was so memorable in the magnificent setting of the Scottish Parliament's Debating Chamber.”

LEITH ACADEMY– entered the Society’s competition for the first time in 2005/2006

"Leith Academy had never taken part in the Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament prior to 2005. The school was delighted to be able to take part in a competition which continues to encourage participation and allows young people to experience debating, regardless of their experience. Our teams enjoyed the challenge and the experience of competitive debating, and over thirty of our pupils attended on the night, culminating in a successful floor debate. Leith Academy is pleased to have entered the competition last year and we look forward to entering future Tournaments."
