We wish to be able to communicate with new lawyers regularly and directly, in the same we we have always communicated with qualified solicitors who are our members. We have historically relied on the support of universities, and training organisations, to pass on information to LLB students, Diploma students, and trainee solicitors. It has also been a challenge for us to make contact with new lawyers who are in between stages.

The ABS section aims to provide information about alternative business structures and the ongoing reform of the legal services market. It contains regular updates from the Society on the Legal Services (Scotland) Bill as it passes through the Scottish Parliament and links to all the relevant policy papers and responses. A comprehensive set of FAQs is available and links are provided to news and updates focusing on ABS.
*NEWS* Networking Event for New Lawyers 31st March 2010
The Trainee and Newly Qualified Society (TANQ) are hosting a seminar on Networking. The event is being held at 6pm on Wednesday 31st March at the Royal Faculty Hall, 12 Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow. TANQ will be joined by seminar speaker Chris Horne (Managing Partner, Campbell Dallas). The event is being run by TANQ and is supported by the Society. Entry is free but you need to book in advance.
*News* UKCLE Student Essay Competition 2010
The UK Centre for Legal Education is delighted to call for entries to their essay competition from students registered with a course of study in law at undergraduate level in a UK higher education institution. Follow the link for the essay title and further details of the competition.
*News* IBA Young Writer's Competition
The Communications Law Committee of the International Bar Association is again running its special project for young lawyers: the 8th Communications Law Committee Young Lawyers’ Writing Competition. For this competition lawyers up to and including the age of 35 on the deadline date for submitting applications (Thursday 1 April 2010) are asked to submit a short paper on one of the chosen topics. New recruitment website for traineeships and summer placements.
The Law Society is delighted to announce it has recently launched a recruitment website for traineeships and summer placements. The site is free for job hunters and recruiters to use and the Society will continue to encourage training organisations to use the site. Visit www.lawscotjobs.co.uk/traineeships
Free CPD for New Lawyers - The autumn programme of FREE CPD for New Lawyers has just been launched. Seminars ranging from 'Instructing Advocates' to Learning to Manage Stress are open to all trainees and newly qualified (up to 5 years PQE) solicitors. Policy Statement on Termination of Training Contracts - As a result of the economic downturn, the Society has received a large number of calls from both trainees and training employers seeking guidance on whether a training contract can be terminated by reason of redundancy. The Society has issued a policy statement on the matter. To read the full policy statement click here.
Admissions Ceremony - The June Admissions Ceremony was held at the Playfair Library, Old College, at Edinburgh University. At the ceremony 65 people were admitted - 43 females and 19 males. Speeches were delivered by Sheriff Robert Dickson and the Society Chief Executive, Lorna Jack. You can read both speeches by clicking on the documents on right hand side of this page.
The Anniversary Essay Competition (60th anniversary of the Society, 10th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament) - as part of the celebrations this essay competition was open to students in their penultimate/final year of the LLB. The prize was a three week placement courtesy of the Scottish Parliament and a £500 cash prize courtesy of the Society. Click here for to find out who won, and read the winning essay.
Education and Training Consultation - the consultation has closed and a new framework for education, training and CPD has was passed at the AGM in May. The changes will be implemented from 2011. Details of the changes to route to qualification can be found at the right of the screen. Further details of the consultation and project plan can be found by following the link.
The Peter Gibson Memorial Fund - A travel scholarship fund set up last year, is looking for applications from people who want to carry out research into consumer policy in another country with a view to applying lessons learned to Scotland. While the trustees are interested in all aspects of consumer policy, they would love to hear from you if you have ideas for reforms in the law that would benefit Scottish consumers, and you think that there are some good practices abroad that merit further investigation.
