Admission as a Solicitor
After completing the first year of training, a trainee can, subject to satisfactory progress and with the agreement of the training firm, apply to be admitted as a solicitor in order to gain valuable experience of appearing in court for their employer’s clients.
It is not possible to apply for admission before one full year of training has been completed. However, trainees approaching the end of the first year may contact the Society to request the relevant papers to apply for admission. We require you to inform us in writing, either by
e-mail or letter.
Admission during the traineeship is not an automatic right, and the employing solicitor will be required to certify that in their opinion the trainee has reached a level of competence at which admission is appropriate. Quarterly performance reviews must be up-to-date prior to admission.
It should be noted that while the Society will process applications as quickly as possible, the admission process involves a block petition to the Court of Session and at certain times of the year the process may take between six and eight weeks.
