Stephen Bennett
Director Stephen Bennett has been working in television for 25 years on primetime commissions for BBC, Sky, NHK (Japan), Discovery and History (USA). He’s been nominated for an Orwell Prize and won three BAFTA Scotland awards amongst others including one for his Dunblane: Our Story featuring the first ever survivor to talk on camera. He was the first director in the UK allowed to film and identify kids in Care, filming them over a year before returning years later when they were adults. His debut feature documentary Eminent Monsters directly led to a United Nations campaign to prevent the use of psychological torture.
He’s just finished a 4x1 hour series, Darren McGarvey’s Class Wars for BBC Scotland examining how social class continues to impact our life opportunities; and a Channel 5 series, Murder in Small Town, featuring John Scott QC, which re-examines the Luke Mitchell case.
