Alan is a Partner in the private client department, based in Glasgow. Alan work covers three main areas: charities, private client and parliamentary matters.
Alan's private client work covers estate planning including wills, executries, trusts and inheritance tax. He is the author of the Scotland chapter in the textbook International Succession. As part of his private client advice Alan often advises on incapacity law (powers of attorney, court appointed guardianship and other methods of managing the affairs of those less able to do so). This has involved acting in some of the leading Sottish cases on incapacity law and estate and succession planning. A regular commentator on incapacity law matters, Alan's written work has been referred to in judicial decision making. Of Alan's private client work, the Legal 500 notes that he "conveys complicated legal concepts with clarity and humour".

Adelle advises on succession planning including executry administration and the preparation of Wills and Powers of Attorney. She also advises individuals and families on trusts, tax planning and asset protection.
Adelle read English Literature and Classics at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with First Class Honours in 2006. Having completed the graduate entry LLB and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, Adelle joined Turcan Connell as a Trainee Solicitor in 2010, qualifying as a Solicitor and Notary Public in 2012. Adelle was promoted to Senior Solicitor in 2015 and Associate in 2018. Adelle is a tutor for the Private Client element of the University of Edinburgh's Diploma in Professional Legal Practice.
Adelle is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and is the Student Liaison Officer for STEP Scotland.  She has received three STEP Worldwide Excellence Awards for achieving the highest marks in each of the STEP Advanced Certificate in Wills and Executries: Law and Practice (Scotland), the STEP Advanced Certificate in Trusts: Law and Practice (Scotland) and the STEP Advanced Certificate in Taxation of Trusts and Estates (Scotland).

This module is based on the rates, reliefs and exemptions for the 2018/19 tax year. The vast majority of the module remains relevant, however the main changes to note are:

  • The freezing of the IHT nil rate band at £325,000 until at least 6 April 2026
  • The increase in the residence IHT nil rate band from £125,000 to £175,000 for deaths on or after post 5 April 2020.
  • The freezing of the residence IHT nil rate band at £175,000 until at least 6 April 2026

She presently serves on the Society’s Trust and Succession Committee and previously served on the Taxation Committee, and she is a member of STEP. Eilidh officially retired at the end of 2019.

Dale has over 20 years of experience in Private Client work, and specialises in executry and trust matters. He has been a tutor on the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Edinburgh since 2002, and Senior Tutor since 2009, planning and directing the Private Client and Advanced Private client courses, and delivering lectures. He is also the external examiner for the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, Private Client course, at the University of Dundee. Dale reviews the Scottish examination papers for STEP, and is an author of modules for the STEP coursework. He speaks at various events attended by other members of the profession, on topics reflecting his expertise in Private Client matters.

Stewart Dunbar, Associate Solicitor, Blackadders LLP
Stewart is also a full member of the STEP. He deals with a broad range of private client matters, and regularly undertakes guardianship applications for incapable adults in a number of Sheriff Courts across the country and prepares financial suitability reports required by other firms of solicitors in their own applications. Stewart is a tutor on the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Edinburgh, and he has previously tutored on the Diploma at the University of Dundee. He is also the examiner and manual-editor for the Trusts Law and Practice module for the STEP Diploma in Scotland.
