The Law Society of Scotland Smartcard is the legal ID for solicitors in Scotland and is valid for entry into prisons, courts, police stations, hospitals and care homes.

  1. CCBE – Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe.  The Law Society of Scotland is a Member of the Council and therefore Scottish Solicitors have access to European Courts and Prisons.
  2. The Law Society of Scotland, Governing Body of Scottish Solicitors.
  3. Your role in the Scottish legal profession.
  4. The Registration Authority for issuing Smartcards.
  5. Your Scottish Solicitor ID number which can be checked here.
  6. Card valid until date.
  7. The Name you practise under.

Confirming the status of a Solicitor's digital signature

To confirm the status of a Solicitor's digital signature, please follow this linkTo use this 'certificate checking tool' you need to know the email address that is registered to the Solicitor's Smartcard.  If the Solicitor sends you a PDF document with a digital signature, the email address will be part of the signature however, if you receive a Word document with a digital signature you will require to follow these steps:

  1. Double-click on the signature
  2. Click on View
  3. Click on the Details tab and scroll down to the Subject field
  4. When you click on Subject, the information contained in the digital certificate will display in the lower half of the window - this includes the email address (which can be copied and pasted into the certificate checker.)
