Diploma fair and alternative careers

Date: 24th February 2021

Time: 09:00 - 16:00

Location:
Online

The morning of this event will focus on the Diploma, with the chance to meet different providers and understand more about this year's application process. The afternoon includes sessions on alternative career options with an LLB, further study or working internationally. While aimed primarily at final-year LLB students, people at any stage of their career can attend and drop in/out.

This year we are running our first-ever virtual 'law fair' style Diploma fair, combined with a number of sessions focused on alternative options to explore.

This year, with the backdrop of the pandemic, it's more important than ever to weigh up all the career options open to you and make an informed decision about your future.

This event will be split into two parts (see the full programme details below):

Morning sessions: focused on the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, to help you decide whether it's the right course for you and choose a provider.

Afternoon sessions: explore the different next-steps you could take with your career as an law graduate or solicitor, including alternative careers, further study options and working internationally.

Who can attend?

This event is primarily targeted at final-year LLB students and graduates, however you can attend regardless of the stage you're at in your legal career or study if a session is of interest to you.

Please note that for LLB students who are not in your final year, we run an event like this every year, so you might prefer to wait until a future year when all the information will be directly relevant to you, particularly relating to Diploma access.

How to sign up

This event is free to attend.

The survey monkey sign up is now closed, however if you still want to register, you can email oliviamoore@lawscot.org.uk to get the joining instructions directly.

We'll be back in touch ahead of the event to give you more information about how the fair will work and how to join via the Zoom link. Please note that to access the functionality needed for this law fair, you will need to update your Zoom to the very latest version.

  • Attend our Law Society talk focused on everything you need to know about applying for the Diploma including timescales, costs, funding and an assessment of the current traineeship market.

  • Drop in and out of virtual rooms to meet the Diploma providers to hear about the Diploma courses they offer and get your questions answered.

    University of Aberdeen
    University of Dundee
    University of Edinburgh
    University of Glasgow
    Robert Gordon University
    University of Strathclyde

  • Attend our panel discussion focused on qualifying and practising as a solicitor in another jurisdiction.

This session isn't just aimed at law students - you might be a qualified solicitor or trainee interested to find out more.

Our speakers include those who have studied Scots Law and qualified into other jurisdictions like the US and England and Wales, work in the international offices of UK-based firms or whose grounding in Scots law has taken them to an alternative career on the other side of the world.

  • This panel discussion will explore some alternative career options you might want to consider with your LLB, if you're not sure the Diploma is the right path for you.

Our panellists for this session work in a range of roles, functions and organisations which include Oil & Gas, teaching, the Scottish Government, civil service and public health.

  • This panel discussion focuses on some of the further study options that a legal qualification can lead to, for example undertaking a Masters.

This session isn't just relevant to LLB students - you may be considering further study at any point in your career.

Some of our panellists have used their further study programmes to progress their career as a Scottish solicitor, whereas others have pursued other paths like academia or working to advise legal teams on specific niche areas of law.
