An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Careers and Outreach team within the Law Society’s Education, Training and Qualifications Directorate. Due to reorganisation of roles, we have an opportunity within the team for a Careers and Outreach Officer. In this varied role you will be responsible for managing key school outreach initiatives, including an annual high school debate tournament and a Street Law programme as well as running support projects for new and future members and providing advice and information to students and new members.

The work of the Education, Training and Qualifications directorate covers a range of areas which include setting standards for and monitoring provision of the route to qualification; regulation of and support for solicitor traineeships; schools outreach; engagement with students, trainees and newly qualified solicitors; equality and diversity; and career development accreditations and qualifications.
Key Responsibilities for this role
In this interesting and rewarding role you will work within a team to deliver a number of new and existing initiatives involving engagement with school pupils, students and trainee solicitors. The role includes:
- Project management of the Law Society’s school outreach work, including an annual high school debate tournament and a Street Law programme in schools.
- Liaise with sponsors, partners, volunteers, and stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of key projects.
- Prepare and deliver content tailored to new lawyers, including running events, website information and blogs.
- Create, manage, and deliver the provision of careers education, advice, guidance and development activities for new and future members.
- Lead the delivery of the Law Society’s career mentoring programme, including co-ordinating training events, recruiting new members and providing guidance to those involved.
- Respond to careers enquiries, including one-to-one advice to new and future members and answer queries relating to the route to qualification.
- Develop, promote, co-ordinate and participate or present at school, college, and university careers events and law fairs.
Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

This role is responsible for managing and developing the processes that regulate Scottish solicitor traineeships and admission to the solicitor profession and for providing guidance and support to trainee solicitors and training units.

The role will report to the Head of Education. The Education, Training and Qualifications team has a varied role which includes setting standards for qualification as a Scottish solicitor and Notary Public and as a solicitor advocate; accrediting university providers of the LLB degree and the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice; the regulatory processes associated with legal training and accreditation as a specialist in a specific area of law; schools outreach work and engagement with and support for students, trainees and newly qualified solicitors; and equality and diversity.

Key Responsibilities for this role
The role will involve leading on quality assurance of traineeships; ensuring compliance with Regulations; acting as a committee secretary; leading and motivating a team of administrators; and development of policies and guidance. The successful candidate will be fully supported by others in the team.
- To lead on quality assurance of traineeships
- To ensure those training to become a Scottish solicitor comply with the Admission as Solicitor (Scotland) Regulations 2019.
- To act as secretary, providing support and guidance, to the Admissions Sub-Committee.
- To lead and motivate a team of four administrators dealing with regulatory processes.
- To review processes and recommend and implement improvements.
- To provide guidance and support about regulatory compliance to trainees and to training units, including where difficulties arise in the trainee/trainer relationship.
- To contribute to the wider policy work of the team, including the production of guidance for students, trainees and trainers.
- To communicate with training units to ensure awareness of regulatory processes for qualifying as a solicitor.
- To carry out any other reasonable duties that may be expected by the Head of Education.
Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
We are looking for a highly motivated and organised individual to manage and develop the processes that regulate Scottish solicitor traineeships and admission to the solicitor profession and to provide guidance and support to trainees and training units. To succeed in this role you must have experience in a regulatory, compliance or policy role, with an ability to exercise judgement, a problem solving focus, evidence of the ability to manage a team, and be an effective communicator with strong presentations skills. You will be able to demonstrate adherence to our values of Respect; Openness; Progress; Integrity; and Inclusion.
In addition the successful candidate will have:
- Experience of stakeholder engagement
- Experience of minute taking
- The ability to interpret regulations or detailed rule sets
- Well developed IT skills across a range of Microsoft application
- The ability to work flexibly to meet dealines
- A high level of empathy
- The ability to work effectively in a hybrid working environment
Some travel within Scotland and some out of hours work may be necessary.

Outreach and Engagement Manager £45,726 per annum (35 hours per week)
It is an exciting time to join the Law Society of Scotland. We have a vacancy for an Outreach and Engagement Manager within the Education, Training and Qualifications team resulting from the previous post holder moving to a new role. Reporting to the Head of Diversity, Careers and Outreach, this role is the account manager for the new lawyer stakeholder group and leads the operational management of the Law Society’s social mobility charity, the Lawscot Foundation, as well as working with our Careers and Wellbeing Manager to increase the range of our Lawscot Wellbeing offering, a dedicated online resource providing help and guidance for Law Society members and employers. The post holder will line manage two members of the Education, Training and Qualifications team.
The work of the Education, Training and Qualifications team is varied and includes setting standards for and monitoring provision of the route to qualification; regulation of and support for solicitor traineeships; schools outreach; engagement with students, trainees and newly qualified solicitors; equality and diversity; and career development accreditations and qualifications.
Key Responsibilities for this role
- To be the key account manager for the new lawyer stakeholder group at a Law Society level, representing their interests to ensure the future of the profession receives a high level of support and engagement from their new, or future, professional body.
- To lead the operational management of and strategy development for the Lawscot Foundation charity.
- To work in association with the Careers and Wellbeing Manager to plan, deliver and lead work in relation to Lawscot Wellbeing, with particular focus on inclusive participation in wellbeing.
- To be the key account manager for students and university contacts, including representing the Law Society at university events and meetings, delivering presentations to students and co-ordinating student events.
- To represent the Law Society and the Lawscot Foundation in a wide range of communication tools to deliver information and gain feedback from audiences.
- To have oversight of key outreach activities and to develop further opportunities for work in this area, including development of potential commercial partnerships to support this work
- To manage projects and have line management responsibility for two direct reports.
Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Degree level education or significant experience in a related position
- Managing a number of projects simultaneously and managing events
- Designing and delivering training sessions on specialist topics and presenting to a range of audiences
- Working with a range of stakeholders
- Line management experience
- Content creation for articles, blogs and presentations
- Influencing and negotiating skills
The successful applicant will be a team player who is innovative and highly organised, with the ability to work on their own initiative and use their judgement to further engagement with students, trainees and newly qualified solicitors and to further the objectives of the Lawscot Foundation charity and the Lawscot Wellbeing programme. This role requires in person attendance at meetings and events and some evening and out of normal office hours work.
