Immediate action from the Scottish Government is essential to prevent the system's potential collapse within 10 years. Regulation of Legal Services - the need for reform
The Scottish Government has amended the Legal Services Regulation Bill to remove proposed political controls over Scottish solicitors, preserve ‘supremacy of the rule of law’. These changes ensure the independence of the legal profession, addressing widespread concerns about potential political interference.

New legislation to usher in major improvements to legal services regulation

Law Society news 20th May 2025
A decade-long campaign by the Law Society has brought new legislation that will better protect legal services consumers and benefit Scotland’s legal sector. The Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Act will see the Law Society continue as the independent regulator of Scottish solicitors, while gaining new powers to act in the public interest.
