Council vacancies

Do you want to lead and support the solicitor profession through times of change?  Do you want to influence key decisions and bring a fresh perspective to the work of the Law Society of Scotland?

The Society's Council plays a key role in the work that we do and each year a number of constituency seats, lay member seats, and co-opted seats come up for election or open recruitment. Why not consider applying yourself, or encourage someone you know to apply, to ensure that your voice is heard as part of this recruitment round?

Co-opted seat

Banking and Finance Sector (Co-opted seat)

The Council of the LSS is seeking to co-opt a member to bring valuable expertise from the banking and finance sector.

More information about the role of the Council and the role of a Council member can be found here.

What we are seeking

Applications are sought from in-house solicitors working in-house in the private sector and within the financial services industry.

Time Commitment and Expenses

The Council meets around nine times per year (plus any ad-hoc meetings which may occasionally arise).

Council meetings are currently held on Friday mornings from 9:30 to 12:30 approx. Meetings are generally agreed in August for meetings taking place next year. Dates for 2026 are: 29 January (afternoon meeting) followed by a dinner, 30 January (Development session), 27 February, 27 March, 24 April, 29 May, 26 June, 18 September, 16 October, 20 November (Online) and 11 December.

Council meets on a hybrid basis (in person in Edinburgh and with an option to join via MS Teams).

This role also involves reading papers in advance and responding to correspondence outside meetings.

This position is voluntary, although reasonable expenses may be claimed.

Length of Term

The appointment is for three years, commencing in November 2025.

How to Apply

If you would like to play a key role in strengthening the voice of the banking and finance sector in our Council, please complete the application form and send it to committeerecruitment@lawscot.org.uk by Wednesday 24 September 2025.

Application Process

Applications will be reviewed by the Nominations Committee, which will make recommendations for appointment to the Council of the LSS.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute your professional insight, help shape decisions and make a real difference. If this opportunity is of interest to you, we would encourage you to apply.
