Keynotes, knowledge and connection

4th October 2024

Are you joining us in Edinburgh for the final day of the Annual Conference? We would love to meet you!

The Society’s Annual Conference is just around the corner, offering a unique blend of insightful sessions, networking opportunities and thought-provoking panel discussions. As always, it promises to be a highlight in Scotland’s legal calendar, where professionals from across the country and beyond gather to share knowledge, engage in meaningful dialogue and connect with peers.

This year’s conference will span 28th-31st October, with an innovative hybrid format to accommodate both virtual and in-person attendees. The event provides flexibility for those navigating busy schedules, while also offering the all-important face-to-face interaction many have been craving in the past few years.

Closing keynote by Simon Weston CBE: an unmissable highlight

This year, attendees will be treated to a closing keynote from the inspiring Simon Weston CBE, whose story of resilience and courage has captivated audiences worldwide. A veteran of the Falklands War, Simon’s journey from being severely injured in combat to becoming a campaigner, author and motivational speaker is one that transcends professions. His talk is sure to resonate deeply with lawyers, as it touches on themes of perseverance, overcoming adversity and finding strength in the most challenging circumstances, concepts familiar to anyone practicing law in today’s fast-paced, high-stakes environment.

His personal experiences of struggle, healing and advocacy offer profound lessons that go beyond the courtroom. Weston’s keynote will not only provide a powerful conclusion to the conference but will also leave attendees with lasting inspiration, especially as the legal profession continues to face its own set of challenges.

Engaging sessions to broaden horizons

The Annual Conference is designed with a focus on the most pressing topics facing the legal profession today, featuring an array of engaging sessions that cover both the broad and niche aspects of law. From the growing influence of artificial intelligence in legal practice to evolving regulatory frameworks, the programme offers something for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned solicitor or new to the profession.

The sessions are a blend of practical workshops, panel discussions and expert presentations. These provide an excellent opportunity for attendees to not only learn from industry experts but also to gain practical insights that can be applied in their day-to-day work. Key topics on this year’s agenda include how to navigate the increasing complexities of data privacy laws, tackling climate-related litigation and enhancing diversity within the legal sector.

For those interested in exploring specific areas of law in greater depth, the conference offers targeted break-out sessions on everything from property law updates to corporate governance. These sessions are also an excellent platform for open discussions, allowing for rich dialogue between attendees and speakers, and promoting collaboration across different areas of expertise.

A strong focus on networking

Connection has always been at the heart of the Society’s Annual Conference, and this year is no different.

While much of the event will take place online, the in-person option on the final day, Thursday 31st October, adds an exciting dimension to this year’s conference. Taking place in Edinburgh, at the heart of Scotland’s legal community, the physical gathering offers attendees the chance to experience the camaraderie and collaboration that is often best fostered face-to-face.

This in-person component will allow participants to attend key sessions, network with peers in a more personal setting and partake in panel events that encourage live debate and discussion. After years of virtual meetings and webinars, this is a fantastic opportunity to re-establish those personal connections and exchange ideas in a dynamic, real-world environment.

Why you should attend

The Annual Conference of the Law Society of Scotland is more than just a professional offering, it’s an opportunity to stay at the forefront of legal developments while strengthening your professional network. Whether attending online or in person, you will leave with new insights, valuable connections and the inspiration to enhance your practice.

And, of course, with Simon Weston CBE closing the event, it’s certain to leave a lasting impression. His powerful keynote address is not to be missed, providing a truly memorable conclusion to what promises to be an enriching and dynamic few days.

Don’t miss your chance to be part of this flagship event. Whether you join virtually or in person, we look forward to spending time with you. For full event details and to book your place, see the Annual Conference hub.
