The Innovation Cup

  5. The Innovation Cup

The work and responsibilities placed on private practice firms are many and varied. All this work carries some form of risk. The risk of giving incorrect advice, of missing crucial dates, of incorrectly handling clients’ monies and many more.

The Innovation Cup is a competition to find the best risk management idea - that “light bulb moment” - which will improve systems, processes or controls within private practice firms. This could be anything from a simple tweak to an existing system or process all the way up to something completely new.

The Innovation Cup was launched in 2018 and is run by the Law Society of Scotland's Insurance Committee in partnership with Master Policy insurance broker Lockton and Master Policy lead insurer RSA.

Hear from our previous winners...

I’m delighted to have won this prestigious prize. I hope that my idea helps the profession to use technology to streamline the supervision of junior colleagues, especially those working remotely. Taking advantage of developments in technology will form a key part of the future of the profession.
Andrew Logue - 2024's winner of the Innovation Cup with his online system to assist trainees and junior solicitors in drafting legal correspondence
It is a privilege to give something back to the profession, particularly to those just starting out on their career. I will be delighted if my winning entry helps point practioners in the right direction regarding aspects of residential coveyancing transactions which can all too easily be overlooked, even by the more experienced conveyancer. The links in the form should also assist in directing users to the relevant source information.
Paul Brown - 2023's recipient of the Innovation Cup with his Conveyancing Purchase Checklist
The Innovation Cup Competition is an exciting and novel way to allow the best risk management ideas to be developed and rolled out across the profession. In a fast-paced legal world, risk management is at the forefront of every transaction and any mechanism to manage and mitigate risk is a must-have tool for the busy practitioner and support staff. Winning the competition was an incredible experience, the highlight being the presentation of the cup in Edinburgh with my family.
