Innovation Cup returns in search for winning risk management idea

4th August 2025 | Law Society news , Technology

The Law Society of Scotland’s risk management competition has returned seeking the best new ideas to reduce risk for the legal sector.

The annual Innovation Cup is focused on improving systems, processes or controls within private practice firms, from a simple tweak through to something completely new. Scottish solicitors, paralegals, trainees, students and other staff working in a legal team or firm are invited to submit an idea to enter.

The winning entrant will receive £1,500 from Master Policy insurers RSA and their idea will be developed by brokers, Lockton and a team of technology experts. Entries will be judged by members of the Law Society’s Insurance Committee alongside representatives from RSA and Lockton.

Rona Paterson, Senior Trading Underwriter at RSA, said: “We’re looking forward to seeing what ideas are put forward for this year’s Innovation Cup. It is a great chance for practitioners to highlight how simple changes could drastically improve their practice.

“The Innovation Cup ensures we can minimise claims to the Master Policy whilst providing the sector with practical solutions to current problems, whether it’s through the key dates calendar that won in 2022 or the technical solution from last year.”

Last year’s winner Andrew Logue, who won with his online system to support trainees and supervisors, said: "I really enjoyed taking part in the Innovation Cup. The competition is a great opportunity to take a step back and reflect on long standing practices and to consider how we can make them better in the future.

“Winning the prize has sparked some really interesting conversations with colleagues and clients about the role technology can play in innovation and change in the workplace."

Applications close on Friday 12 September. Find out more about this year’s Innovation Cup and how to enter on our website.
