  4. New Scottish solicitors given ceremonial welcome to profession
30th April 2025

The Law Society of Scotland has formally welcomed 71 new solicitors to the profession at an admissions ceremony in central Edinburgh.

The historic Signet Library hosted this morning’s ceremony, as Law Society President Susan Murray presented each admittee with a certificate of enrolment.

Today’s event is the sixth admissions ceremony held in 2025, reflecting the strong growth in solicitor numbers in Scotland in recent years.

Susan Murray said: “Congratulations to the talented group of new solicitors who we have formally welcomed to the profession. It is always such a pleasure to celebrate this moment with them, alongside their friends and family.

“Today’s ceremony is the culmination of years of study and on-the-job training. Our new solicitors should be proud of what they’ve achieved and confident about the contributions they will make to our profession in the years to come.”

Law Society Acting Chief Executive Kevin Lang, who was also at today’s ceremony, said: “It is an honour and a pleasure to have been involved in today’s ceremony, and to be able to offer my congratulations to Scotland’s newest solicitors.

“Our new admittees have become solicitors at an exciting time. They are joining a profession that is embracing change that benefits solicitors and the general public in areas including technology, wellbeing, diversity and the environment.”

Guest speaker at the ceremony was Kenny Robertson, Head of Innovation and Technology, Legal and Regulatory Affairs at Natwest Group.

He encouraged the new solicitors to have perspective, be curious and “be brave enough to be yourself, even when you feel an urge to conform to something you are not.”

Mr. Roberston added: “Don’t chase perfection, chase excellence. Be brave enough to be the best you can be, put your hand up for something new, ask the question in front of everybody else and progress as a consequence.”
