Time to spotlight Scotland's in-house rising stars as 2024 award launches

22nd April 2024 | Law Society news , In-house lawyers

The Law Society of Scotland is looking to spotlight Scotland’s newest in-house talent with the launch of this year's In-House Rising Star award.

The annual competition, which is in its 12th year, provides recognition for the important work of in-house practitioners and in particular the contribution of trainees and recently qualified solicitors.

In-house teams are being encouraged to nominate the best emerging talent in their workplaces with up to five years post qualification experience.

Jennifer Malcolm, member of the In-house Lawyers Committee and a judge on this year’s panel, said: “It’s a real joy to see the upcoming talent that exists in the in-house community and it’s a privilege for us to be able to showcase the depth of expertise and knowledge of in-house lawyers with the In-House Rising Star Award.

“As hybrid working has become normal, it’s really important we shine a light on the hard work undertaken by our in-house colleagues, especially now that more of this is done from the home office. The previous winners and nominees have been outstanding, so I am looking forward to receiving this year’s applications and celebrating the hard work of all the nominees at the In-house Annual Conference in June.”

On winning last year’s In-House Rising Star award, Christopher Knudsen, said: "I'm really grateful to have been given this award. Originally, I didn't think it was for me. There's plenty of superstar in-house Scottish lawyers that are equally deserving for the work they do. I wouldn't be where I am without these talented in-house peers who I've learned a huge amount from through various community events.

“Professionally, the award has given me so many unexpected opportunities which have been great for my career: to speak with lots of new people; take on new responsibilities; added credibility to my work; etc. Writing about the environment and sustainability for the Scotsman has been one of my favourites so far. So to anyone who's helping their business to grow and adding value to their day-to-day, I would encourage you to apply and just go for it! You deserve to be acknowledged for the great work you do.”

The award will be judged by a panel made up of the Law Society’s In-house Lawyers Committee.
