Advocate and solicitor appointed sheriffs

16th April 2015 | careers

The Scottish Government has announced the appointment of two new full time sheriffs.

Robert Weir QC is to serve in the Sherifffdom of South Strathclyde, Dumfries & Galloway, and Ms Joan Kerr, solicitor has been appointed to Glasgow & Strathkelvin.

Mr Weir was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1995, practising principally in commercial dispute resolution, with a specialty in maritime law. He was an advocate depute between 2005 and 2008, and took silk in 2010.

Ms Kerr was admitted as a solicitor in 1991, and for 14 years until 2008 was with HBM Sayers, first as solicitor and latterly partner. She was appointed as a stipendiary magistrate in 2008 and a part time sheriff in 2011.

Both appointments were made by the Queen on the recommendation of the First Minister, who made the nominations on the basis of a report by the independent Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland.
