Faculty sets up International Committee to promote Scots system

10th February 2015

A new International Committee has been set up by the Faculty of Advocates to help promote the profile of Scotland's legal system internationally.

Chaired by Alistair Clark QC, the committee will comprise advocates from a wide range of backgrounds and practice areas, with the aim of ensuring that the strengths of the bar and the legal system are recognised abroad.

James Wolffe QC, Dean of Faculty, said: "In a globalised world, we need to make sure that the excellence of Scotland's legal system and the skills of Scotland's lawyers are understood internationally.

"The Faculty is already working with the Law Society of Scotland, the Scottish Arbitration Centre and others to that end. Alistair Clark's committee will build on work which he and others are already doing, and I am grateful to him for taking on the task."

Mr Clark commented: "This committee will seek to ensure that the bar, and the Scottish legal system generally, are promoted at an international level when appropriate opportunities arise. As part of that aim, I have been representing the Faculty's interests in the Plan for Growth: Scottish Co-Ordination Group. The group, which brings together representatives of the legal profession, the alternative dispute resolution sector, government, business organisations and international agencies, has agreed to ensure a more co-ordinated approach to the promotion internationally of the legal profession in Scotland and of Scotland as a forum for dispute resolution."
