Lord Arthurson takes place on bench

2nd May 2017 | careers

Paul Arthurson QC was installed today as a Senator of the College of Justice, taking the judicial title Lord Arthurson.

At the installation ceremony in the First Division courtroom, he was welcomed to the bench by the Lord President, Lord Carloway.

A graduate of the Universities of Edinburgh and Oxford, Lord Arthurson became an advocate in 1991, specialising in civil practice, principally in the Court of Session, latterly in high value reparation and clinical negligence actions. He has served as a chair of tribunals for the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland and on the Parole Board for Scotland. He was appointed as a sheriff in 2005, a Queen's Counsel in the same year and a temporary Judge of the Court of Session in 2013. He has served as a member of the Sheriff Appeal Court since 2015.

Referring to his “distinguished legal career", Lord Carloway said: “You have already sat many times in both the Outer House and High Court of Justiciary and therefore know what to expect from the legal practitioners, who are represented here today, from your colleagues on the bench, notably the appellate divisions.

“Your career as a sheriff has also seen you appointed to the Sheriff Appeal Court and as a specialist Sheriff Personal Injury Court sheriff.

“This breadth of experience will undoubtedly stand you in good stead in the coming years. We all wish you and your family well to this new and exciting path in your legal career.”
