MSPs in call for evidence on Burial and Cremation Bill

22nd October 2015

Views from the public on the Scottish Government's Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Bill are being invited by two Holyrood committees as they begin their stage 1 scrutiny of the bill.

The Health & Sport Committee and the Local Government & Regeneration Committee are each looking at different aspects of the bill, which will modernise and provide a comprehensive legal framework for burials and cremations in Scotland.

Proposals to implement the recommendations of the Bonomy report on Infant Cremation will be vetted by the Health & Sport Committee, which wants to hear from those affected by pregnancy loss, stillbirth or infant loss as to whether the measures are fit for purpose.

Meanwhile the Local Government & Regeneration Committee will explore the appropriateness of the provisions to introduce regulation of funeral directors, as well as looking at the extent to which the bill will address the issue of funeral costs.

The respective calls for evidence from the Health & Sport Committee and the Local Government & Regeneration Committee set out in more detail the points on which each would particularly welcome views.

The closing date for submissions to each committee is Friday 4 December.
