QC offers lawyers their own social media site

5th February 2015 | information technology

Scots lawyers are being invited to join a new social networking site launched by barrister and QC Bill Braithwaite.

Mootis (mootis.co.uk) has been launched with the aim of streamlining the legal sector’s use of social media. In addition to lawyers, it is aimed at a wider business audience and anyone with an interest in legal services.

Unlike Twitter, which restricts individual posts to 140 characters, Mootis allows up to 500 words, enabling users to explain an opinion. It also allowes users to upload and share video blogs, documents, images and audio.

It integrates with other main social media sites, and users can register as a new user on the Mootis signup page or log in through Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook – as individuals or organisations. It can be used to communicate with other users either publicly, or privately, and offers professional verification to establish authenticity of identities, along with privacy and security features.

Mr Braithwaite commented on the launch: “Sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Facebook are hugely successful, but we feel the world of legal services is large enough to warrant its own, bespoke platform.

“There’s a lot of clutter. Mootis is specifically tailored for what is a vast legal services marketplace that extends far beyond lawyers.”

He believes Mootis will appeal to those who are yet to engage with the world of social media, as well as those already registered with sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn.

“We believe existing social media users will welcome the benefits of a site focused entirely on legal services", he explained. “For those yet to engage with social media this is their chance to get in at the beginning of something new and exciting. It’s a brand new platform, a level playing field.”
