Society Council election winners announced for Glasgow and Fife

20th May 2016

Four first-time members, and three returning ones, will represent the constituencies covering Glasgow and Fife following the contested elections for the Law Society of Scotland's governing Council.

In the Glasgow & Strathkelvin seat, Ross Yuill, Anne Macdonald and David Mair join returning members Alison Atack and Austin Lafferty as the five representatives, while returning member Susan Williams and new member Gwen Haggerty will serve the constituency of Cupar, Dunfermline & Kirkcaldy.

Mr Yuill, a former President of the Glasgow Bar Association, came top of a nine-strong field, followed by Ms Macdonald of Harper Macleod, who works with local firms across Scotland as part of the HM Connect network. After Morven Douglas, Daniel Donaldson and Philip Curle were eliminated under the proportional voting system, former Society President Mr Lafferty took the third place. Nicholas Taylor was then eliminated leaving Ms Atack of Lindsays, and Mr Mair of Glasgow City Council, as the other successful candidates.

In Fife, Cupar solicitor Ms Williams and Dunfermline based Ms Haggerty came in ahead of Andrew Taylor of Rosyth.

In the other constituencies due for election this year, Simon Brown of Irvine and Stuart Naismith of Johnstone were returned unopposed in Greenock, Kilmarnock & Paisley, as was Amanda Millar in Perth.

The successful candidates will join Council at its meeting next Friday, 27 May.

Lorna Jack, chief executive of the Society, said: “It has been very encouraging to see such interest from solicitors who want to be involved in the work of their professional body. I want to thank all of them for putting their names forward for election.

“I congratulate everyone who was successful and look forward to working with our new and re-elected Council members over the next three years. I also offer my thanks for standing to those who were not elected this time round. I hope there will be other ways in which they can be involved with the work of their professional body as we seek to deliver world-class service.”
