Society Council voting now open

11th May 2015 | law society of scotland

Voting in this year's Law Society of Scotland’s Council elections is now open. Solicitors in the five contested constituencies have until 12 noon on Wednesday 20 May to cast their votes.

All solicitors in the Highlands and islands, as well as the seats covering Arbroath, Dundee and Forfar; Duns, Haddington, Jedburgh, Peebles and Selkirk; and Alloa, Falkirk, Linlithgow and Stirling in Scotland, along with Scottish solicitors in England & Wales, have a choice of candidates to be their next Council representatives. No election was needed in the constituency taking in Campbeltown, Dumbarton, Dunoon, Fort William, Oban and Rothesay, where two candidates were nominated for the two vacancies.

Click here for personal statements from the candidates. Voting is online, by logging in to the members' section of the Society’s website. Help is available for anyone having difficulty logging in. The results will be announced on 21 May and the first Council meeting follwing the election is on 29 May.

The Society's annual general meeting is in the George Hotel, Edinburgh at 5.30pm on 28 May.

Chief executive Lorna Jack said: "It is really positive to see so many of our members putting themselves forward to help their professional body lead and support a successful respected Scottish legal profession. Council members represent the views of Scottish solicitors and help to shape the Council's policies and take decisions affecting the profession. The legal profession continues to go through a huge amount of change and I would encourage our members to take the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidates.”
