Voting opens in Society Council Highland by-election

27th June 2018 | law society of scotland

Online voting has opened to fill a vacant seat on the Law Society of Scotland's ruling Council, representing solicitors across the north of Scotland.

Four candidates are contesting the seat, one of two covering the sheriff court districts of Dingwall, Dornoch, Elgin, Inverness, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Lochmaddy, Portree, Stornoway, Tain and Wick. Sheekha Saha (Western Isles Council, Stornoway) holds the other seat representing the area.

The candidates are:

  • Sam Cowie, Digby Brown LLP, Inverness
  • Paul Nevin, Moray Council, Elgin
  • Andrea Ross, Shetland Islands Council, Lerwick
  • Serena Sutherland, Drever & Heddle LLP, Kirkwall

Solicitors based in the area have until 12 noon on Tuesday 10 July 2018 to cast their vote on the members’ section of the Society’s website. The results of the election will be announced shortly afterwards and the successful candidate will be invited to attend the 7 September Council meeting.

Lorna Jack, chief executive of the Society commented: “The opportunity for Scottish solicitors to vote for their Council representatives comes round just once every three years and with the Highlands and Islands' unique geographical spread and professional diversity, it is particularly important that members make good use of their votes. Online voting is quick and easy, so please do take a minute to find out which of your colleagues is standing and get voting.”
