Carolyn Thurston Smith

Policy Executive
Law Society of Scotland

Carolyn Thurston Smith leads the Law Society of Scotland’s work on trade policy and commercial law covering areas including privacy and data protection, obligations, intellectual property, and competition. She was policy lead for the Law Society’s recent work on the Defamation and Malicious Publications (Scotland) Bill, which recently passed in the Scottish Parliament. She has a strong interest in the intersection of data protection and digital competition dynamics and other regulatory challenges posed by eCommerce. Carolyn has a background in EU law and policy, having worked for the Law Societies’ Brussels Office, where she worked on numerous internal market projects, including the proposal for the General Data Protection Regulation.
