Our online locum register and the Society's recruitment service, LawScotJobs ran in parallel over the past three years.
In order to give greater visibility to job seekers' availability and ease of access for firms wishing to fill posts, the locum register has now moved from the members' area of this website and the service has become part of the Lawscotjobs website.
There are frequent requests for locum assistance throughout the year. If you have spare capacity, why not register your availability with Lawscotjobs now?

Candidates who wish to view the current vacancies should go to the Lawscotjobs homepage and click on the “Search by Contract Type" tab - then select "Locum/Contract".
We also advise you to sign up for job alerts to be automatically emailed any locum or short term contract jobs which have been posted by firms looking for assistance.

Recruiters who are sole practitioners may currently advertise free of charge on Lawscotjobs, any holiday or sickness-cover locum posts which they need to fill. This offer does not cover posts such as maternity leave cover which may be advertised in the normal way on Lawscotjobs.
From the Lawscotjobs homepage you can register as a recruiter. After you have completed the simple registration form please contact us and request a free of charge Locum job credit. You will then receive a confirmation email and can then logon and add the vacancy.

On what basis is work carried out?
Locum practitioners may be:
- solicitors with a full practising certificate
- solicitors without a current practising certificate who are retained on the roll. Such employees must not hold themselves out or be held out to be working as 'solicitors'
- graduates who have completed their traineeship but who have not found employment as a solicitor, perhaps working as a paralegal.
Locums may take up work in any number of flexible ways, by agreement with the employer, for example:
- As short-term employees, or on a self-employed basis, working for a Scottish firm of solicitors (Professional Indemnity and Client Protection Fund paid by employer). Cost of the practising certificate is a matter for negotiation
- As consultants (employees for whom the Professional Indemnity and Client Protection Fund contributions are paid by the firm). Cost of the practising certificate is a matter for negotiation
- As self-employed 'career locums', effectively sole practitioners working on their own Professional Indemnity and Client Protection Fund contributions. Own practising certificate required and minimum three years post-qualification experience. This will be a necessary option where the employer is an organisation whose Professional Indemnity cover does not cover the solicitor.
