The In-house Rising Star award is a fantastic opportunity to recognise outstanding in-house trainees and NQs. We talk to In-house Lawyers Committee member, David Boag, solicitor at Glasgow City Council and one of this year’s judges, about the success of the award and why he would encourage you to take this opportunity to celebrate emerging in-house talent.

What is the In-house Rising Star award?

First established in 2013, the award is designed to shine a light on the wealth of talent we have in the in-house community and, in particular, recognise the critical contribution of those in the early stages of their career. Past winners and nominees have come from a wide variety of private and public sector organisations, which highlights the growing breadth of excellent in-house opportunities. Every year we receive truly exceptional nominations and I’ve no doubt the same will go for 2019!

Why should you nominate a colleague or contact?

It’s a simple way to acknowledge an individual’s valued contribution to your in-house service and gives you an opportunity to promote the tailored legal service provided to your organisation (or one you work closely with). It also highlights the value and worth of investing in an in-house team.  As I know from my own experiences at Glasgow City Council, understanding your client’s business means that as in-house counsel, you are often the best placed to support them.

What’s not to like! How do people get involved and what are the rules?

Nominating is easy! To be eligible, nominees must be trainees or solicitors with up to five years PQE and currently be working in-house.

It’s not only in-house solicitors that can do the nominating, you could be a non-legal colleague or a private practice solicitor with an in-house contact or client that you think deserves recognition. The award criteria include key achievements of the nominee; how they have innovated or improved legal process for their organisation; and positive contributions outside their employment.

The nomination form is available on our website and is straightforward to complete. Send your entries to Beth Anderson, Head of Engagement for In-house Lawyers at the Law Society by 5pm on 3 May.
