Honorary Membership nominations open for outstanding contributors

18th May 2026 | Law Society news

The Law Society of Scotland has opened nominations for Honorary Membership to recognise Scottish solicitors who have made an outstanding contribution to the public good through their legal careers.

The prestigious award has been conferred on just 23 people in the Law Society’s history, with the most recent recipients being founding former chair of the Lawscot Foundation Christine McLintock and former Law Society Property Law Committee convener Ross MacKay.

Law Society President Patricia Thom said: “Honorary Membership is reserved for Scottish solicitors who have made the most outstanding contributions to our profession and the public good. Past recipients show how prestigious this award is for Scotland’s legal sector.

“Solicitors give their time and expertise in so many areas of civic life beyond their day-to-day work, and our communities benefit enormously from those contributions. We will be looking for candidates who best epitomise that community spirit.

“If you know someone whose contribution should be recognised, please make a nomination. Your nomination will help our Council ensure the most deserving members of the legal sector receive this honour.

Anyone can make a nomination for Honorary Membership, with eligibility limited to people who no longer hold a practising certificate. Nominations are open from today until Monday, 15 June 2026.

Nominations can be made by submitting a nomination form, with further information available on our website.
