Law Society Council by-election in Glasgow and Strathkelvin constituency

19th January 2023 | Law Society news

Solicitors have an opportunity to put themselves forward to represent members in the Glasgow and Strathkelvin constituency on the Law Society's Council in an upcoming by-election.

Murray Etherington, President of the Law Society of Scotland, said: “Being a member of the Society's Council offers a key opportunity to engage in issues of significance to the legal profession and wider civic Scotland. It also presents an opportunity to influence key decisions, and to bring your own fresh perspective to the work of the Law Society as we move on from the challenges of the pandemic and implement our new five-year strategy.

"The vacancy arises following the sad passing last year of our former colleague on Council, David Mair. David was immensely proud to be a Scottish solicitor and to represent his constituents on Council. He was passionate about a successful legal sector and the importance of the Law Society’s role within it and, in addition to being a member on Council, served on our Board, Regulatory Committee and Public Policy Committee.

“Being a Council member is a stimulating, challenging and highly rewarding experience and I strongly encourage solicitors in and around Glasgow to consider standing.”

Nominations to stand in the upcoming by-election must be submitted by 12 noon on Thursday, 2 February 2023.

To submit a nomination you must be a member of the Society working in the Glasgow and Strathkelvin constituency and be supported by two proposers, who must be either practising or non-practising members of the Society and have business addresses in the constituency which you are standing for. The successful by-election candidate will take their seat on Council until May 2025 when the next election for this constituency is due to take place.

Further information about being a Council member and how to apply is available on the Council vacancies page on our website.
