Tributes were paid today to the advocate Niall McCluskey, who has died aged 53.

Mr McCluskey obtained his LLB and diploma from the University of Aberdeen and was called to the bar in 1995.

He was involved in hundreds of cases, prosecuting and defending at all levels. He also had significant experience of extradition cases and a particular interest in human rights with respect to both criminal law and extradition.

He was the nephew of the late Lord McCluskey.

Ken Dalling, the Law Society of Scotland President, said: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Niall McCluskey. Niall was a talented and well-respected advocate whose expertise and contributions will be sorely missed by the Scottish legal community. Niall’s passing at such a young age will come as a devastating shock to all those who knew him and our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.”
