Judicial Institute annual report published

The Judicial Institute for Scotland has published its annual report for 2018-19.

During the year to 31 March 2019 the Institute delivered 37 days of training including an induction course for 18 prospective new justices of the peace from the Sheriffdom of Grampian, Highland & Islands, and an induction course for summary sheriffs.

It also delivered its first temporary judge induction, following the appointment of five new temporary judges at the end of 2018.

In January 2019, the Institute launched the first blended learning programme for the entire professional court judiciary, in response to the introduction in the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018.

It also completed work on developing its first written strategic plan for the period 2019-22, which outlines how the Institute will achieve its purpose of supporting justice in Scotland through the provision of the highest standard of judicial training and education.

Sheriff Alistair Duff, director of the Institute, commented: “The Judicial Institute has continued to develop and flourish throughout the period covered by the report. This is entirely due to the hard work and innovation of my fantastic colleagues who, day in and day out, maintain the highest standards of service and excellence.”
