LexFactor band contest is latest virus cancellation

12th March 2020 | law society of scotland

LexFactor, the Law Society of Scotland's first ever battle of the legal bands, has been postponed at the last minute due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Lorna Jack, the Society's chief executive, confirmed this afternoon that the Society had made "the difficult decision" to call off tonight's staging of the event, at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh.

Six bands made up of members of the legal profession had been due to take part in the talent contest in aid of the Society's Lawscot Foundation, which supports law students from disadvantaged backgrounds, in front of a judging panel chaired by the Lord President, Lord Carloway.

"A lot of blood, sweat and tears (mine mostly) and a whole lot of passion has gone in to organising this event and we have been thrilled by your support and enthusiasm", Ms Jack said in a message on the Society's website.

"However, we are aware that some guests and organisations are understandably concerned about travel plans and potential risks of attending large scale events in the current circumstances. The welfare of our members and guests is our priority and in light of recent developments, it is the right thing to postpone this event until such a time when we can ensure attendees' safety and the atmosphere and attendance which we have all been looking forward to.

"The Lawscot Foundation does outstanding work to drive equal access to our profession and we are determined that our first ever Lexfactor event is a resounding success which reflects the passion, enthusiasm and drive of the inspirational young people it supports."

She added: "We hope to confirm a new date as soon possible and will keep you informed. Current tickets will be valid for the new date. If you let us know that you are unable to attend the new date, we will be sorry not to see you there, but will be happy to process a refund in full."

A provisional date of 14 May has been set for hosting the rescheduled LexFactor Battle, subject obviously to the situation regarding the virus at that time.
