Senior lawyers support Aberdeen students' court career day

24th October 2019 | careers , education-training

The Lord President, Lord Carloway, leads a number of senior legal figures who will give time this coming Saturday, 26 October to speak to students at Aberdeen University about a career in advocacy or litigation.

Organised by the University of Aberdeen Mooting Society, and titled the Inaugural National "Approaching the Bar" Conference and Networking, the event is intended to bridge the gap between students and career opportunities in advocacy and litigation, whether criminal or civil law practice. It will also provide networking with speakers, law firms and chambers, for opportunities in the law.

Lord Carloway will give the keynote address. Others taking part are Alex Prentice QC, Senior Crown Counsel; defence QC Donald Findlay; Sheriff Principal Derek Pyle; Dorothy Bain QC, former Principal Advocate Depute and now in civil practice;
Sheriff Graeme Napier; John Scott QC, President of the Society of Solicitor Advocates; Robert McDiarmid, head of Dispute Resolution and partner with Stronachs; Andy Shanks, Procurator Fiscal for Aberdeen; and John Mullholland, President of the Law Society of Scotland.

The event takes place at King’s College Conference Centre, Aberdeen University, and is open to all, whether or not students at Aberdeen University.

It has been sponsored by law firms including Pinsent Masons, CMS, Stronachs, Aberdein Considine and Terra Firma. Society supporters include the Faculty of Advocates and the Law Society of Scotland.

Anna Black, President of the Aberdeen University Mooting Society commented: "We are very excited to host this event for all law students interested in the litigation area, be that criminal, commercial, international based or more. This is the first of its kind in Scotland, with a focus on litigation as a core area for students to consider as a potential career path, and for people to get more engaged in the current developments of the litigation world.

"Putting on an event like this is only made possible by the support we have received from our sponsors and I would like to take the opportunity to thank them and all the speakers who have agreed to come and talk at the conference."
