Society sets off on trainee roadshow

28th September 2016 | education-training , law society of scotland

A roadshow series has been devised by the Law Society of Scotland to provide an opportunity for trainee solicitors across Scotland to hear from an expert panel and meet other trainees in their area.

The trainee roadshow will travel to Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh, bringing together representatives from the Society, the Scottish Young Lawyers Association (SYLA) and LawCare, the charity which provides support to the legal community, for a panel discussion.

Attendees at the free events will have the opportunity to hear from the panel about common questions and concerns for trainees, how to get more support from the profession and tips on wellbeing.

The roadshows follow the launch of Legal Wellbeing Scotland, a collaborative initiative to promote and support mental health and wellbeing in the Scottish legal community, earlier this year.

Heather McKendrick, head of careers and outreach at the Society, commented: “We’re very excited to launch the trainee roadshow this year and I’m really looking forward to getting to know first-hand about the big issues that are facing trainee solicitors across Scotland.

“These events will give trainees a fantastic opportunity to get some great advice and build their networks, which can be really beneficial to their future careers as well as crucial to their general wellbeing.”

Trish McLellan, co-ordinator for LawCare in Scotland and Northern Ireland, added: “Law can be very demanding and we know that one in five solicitors will experience a mental health issue at least once in their career. Having a good network and knowing how and where to access support is really important. We’re delighted to contribute to these events and make sure more solicitors are aware of the help on offer early in their career.”

The trainee roadshow timetable is:

Tuesday 18 October: Dundee, Thorntons LLP
Thursday 20 October: Edinburgh, Law Society of Scotland offices
Tuesday 15 November: Aberdeen, The Society of Advocates
Thursday 17 November: Glasgow, The Royal Faculty of Procurators

Current trainees can sign up to attend one of the events by emailing oliviaparker@lawscot.org.uk. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
