An appeal to solicitors to put themselves forward for election to its ruling Council has meen made today by the Law Society of Scotland.

Nominations have opened for 10 seats in six constituencies, and close at noon on Thursday 23 April, with voting taking place by 20 May. Solicitors with places of business in the following sheriff court districts, and the constituency for members in England & Wales, can nominate themselves for election:

  • Dingwall, Dornoch, Elgin, Inverness, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Lochmaddy, Portree, Stornoway, Tain and Wick – two Council seats
  • Duns, Haddington, Jedburgh, Peebles and Selkirk - two Council seats
  • Campbeltown, Dumbarton, Dunoon, Fort William, Oban and Rothesay – two Council seats
  • Arbroath, Dundee and Forfar – one Council seat
  • Alloa, Falkirk, Linlithgow and Stirling – two Council seats
  • England & Wales – one Council seat

Alistair Morris, President of the Society, said: “I speak from my own experience when I say that being a Council member can be fulfilling, fascinating, challenging and insightful. It is a great opportunity to help lead and support Scotland’s solicitors as well as a chance to form relationships with their colleagues from different parts of the country. I would recommend joining the Council to any solicitor who wants to help shape the future of the legal profession.”

Information about the application process, and what is involved in being a Council member, can be found on the Society’s website.
