SYLA announces AGM and seeks new faces on committee

5th May 2023

The Scottish Young Lawyers' Association will hold its annual general meeting at 6pm on Wednesday 31 May 2023.

The meeting will be held both virtually (via Zoom) and in-person at Burness Paull, Exchange Plaza, 50 Lothian Road, Edinburgh EH3 9WJ. Refreshments and nibbles will be provided by Burness Paull.

All SYLA members are welcome to attend. Registration of both forms of attendance will close at 4pm on Friday 26 May 2023. Register here.

At the meeting the President will provide an update for the SYLA year 2022-23, followed by the treasurer, who will provide a summary of the accounts.

Members will also elect a new committee for 2023-24. The SYLA welcomes members from all areas of Scotland, from any background and at any level (from student to 10 years' PQE, and advocates of up to five years' standing). It is seeking motivated and committed individuals who want to facilitate change and help others.

The committee meets for two in-person planning meetings (usually on a Saturday in July and January). Monthly meetings also take place (between September and May) in-person and virtually.

Members wishing to stand for election should apply by Monday 22 May to mail@syla.co.uk. Applications received after the deadline will not be processed. Applications are by way of a video, along with a completed nomination form (this should be requested by emailing mail@syla.co.uk).

Candidates may stand for any of the following positions:

  • Non-executive committee member (seven positions available)
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Vice President
  • President (candidates must have completed a full year on the committee to be eligible)

Those applying for non-executive positions should submit a video of no longer than 45 seconds. For those applying for all other positions, please submit a video of no longer than 60 seconds. Applications should include the following information:

  • Name
  • Stage of career
  • Firm or organisation (where applicable)
  • Location
  • Position you wish to apply for
  • Why you wish to join the SYLA committee
  • What you will bring to the SYLA

The videos will be shown during the AGM, after which voting will take place (using SurveyMonkey).

If you have any questions about joining the committee, please contact any of the current committee members.

SYLA looks forward to seeing members at the AGM.
