This webinar is part of our ‘Around the World’ series.

Freedom of speech and protest are rights enshrined in several Acts for UK citizens, and yet reports from the Human Rights Watch suggest that these rights are under attack in the UK.

This webinar will compare and contrast freedom of speech and protest protections in the UK to Denmark, widely regarded as one of the most protective states for these rights. Professor Sten Schaumburg-Müller of the University of South Denmark and Professor David Mead of the University of East Anglia will analyse why freedom of speech and protest are flourishing or declining in their countries, and what the UK needs to do to ensure we continue to strengthen the defense of our rights rather than weaken them.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discover how the rights to freedom of speech and protest are protected or restricted in Denmark and the UK

  • Analyse the current climate in the UK and what may happen to our speech and protest rights in the future given current political indications

  • Learn important lessons from Denmark about how the UK should protect its rights to freedom of speech and protest for its citizens
